Success in Web Design

Difference between how a traditional web designer designs a website compared to an SEO person? One looks for beauty while the SEO web-designer looks for readability, findabilty and crawability. Website design is not only about the combination of different colors and font sizes. But it's also about the structure of navigation i.e. how you want to take your web visitor to reach goals.

SEO strategy is comprised of several processes, mainly at 3 different stages, that is:
1) Good website design
2) Seeking attention from different search engines and directories related to your business niche
3) Achieving long-term popularities on the Internet

"Simplicity is king when designing a website"! Sometimes too many internal links or unstructured navigation will make user think too hard and also end up misleading the search engines. Finding the right coordination between modern yet simple design, informative and engaging the user is the basic principle of success.

It's also important that you set off by setting goals and transition levels for each piece of your new web site. Calls to action should be defined and put in place for each section of content that answers your users' needs and wants. Points to be considered when you start designing:
  • Make sure your site reflects what users want when designing.
  • Make your product/services of the business more easy to navigate.
  • Be creative and build a modern, user-friendly look and feel.
Some points that make a clear understanding of how good web design directly affects the success of SEO:

1. When it comes to abandonment rates, responsive website design really help with SEO because if anyone visits a non-friendly mobile site in mobile device then it's much more likely they will abandon it. As search engine takes this into consideration when ranking a web page, site must be optimized for mobile.

2. Size of the website has great impact on search rankings. Therefore, Parallax design i.e. building your entire website on a single page, is not a good option until and unless if it's a company page or contest page in which you probably need to rank for two or three keywords.

3. Although your web designer has done the great job in designing a site, but that affects horribly with site optimization then you need to consider these things:

  • Code Bloat can hurt rankings if your site’s design integrates too much code, so keep your code lean and mean.
  • Try to adapt the SEO acceptable permalink structure rather than dynamic structures which don’t do well in search engines.
  • If possible, try to avoid JavaScript code as it cannot be crawled.

4. These days, popular choices have been using an infographics content in place of the normal graphics as they are more eye-catching and engage readers for more time. Make sure to use ALT tag or some text to help Google understand things as images can’t be crawled.

5. To impress visitors with amazing header could be a poisonous thing now, instead try to use Fold – what visitor initially sees first on any website.

6. Using breadcrumbs can be a life saver as it helps search engine in crawling the website. From a usability point, it also helps the user in navigating to the particular service page without hitting back button.

7. Internal linking not only increase usability experience for visitors, but it is also good for SEO as it reminds search engine that your old blogs and pages still holds the value.

At the end of the day, it works well if you’re not much flashy, have good content to be presented with proper HTML structure.

Tips To Get Better Quality Backlinks

Links pointing back to our website from a number of other quality websites play a marvelous role in a website’s ability to rank highly. These are called backlinks, inlinks or inboudlinks, interchangeably.

Finding linking sites that are relevant and useful to your business, which can perhaps get you referred visitors and potential customers that you can engage with is a difficult task as Google uses factors link quality of content, age of site, social networking, PageRank to link sites and many more. Backlinks from another site pointing to you is a meaning vote of confidence because without adequate links, site will never achieve higher keyword ranking.

In this article, I'd like to share some tips to make sure you spend best time and energy to find targeted backlinks which is a major element of SEO success.

1. Social Networking profile - Effectively utilizing social bookmarking/networking sites allows you to add links to your website and other sites in your bio information.

2. Press Release - Using PR sites will give a massive push in Google rank, but don't expect much traffic at first. Make sure to start any release with effective words as it got much importance to boost keywords.

3. Document Sharing Sites - Submitting your articles and ebooks to document sharing websites are the great way to get quality backlinks. This can also be done by compiling blog posts as PDF files and uploading it to file sharing websites.

4. Guest Blogging - This not only gives you a backlink but also gets you a bit of fame, but as Matt Cutts recently stated that "Guest blogging is done; it's just gotten too spammy"! So post blogs on your website instead.

5. Blog Commenting - Writing valuable comments on people's blog to build backlinks actually works. It is important to know that comments on nofollow blogs is useless while dofollow blog comments is the best way to improve your blog commenting activity.

6. Forum Posting -  Good forums not only serves as a great backlinks, but if your posts are truly interesting and helpful then they can also provide you with a more natural traffic.

7. Link Baiting - Writing some great content so that other people will share and get backlinks for you. It is the most organic way of getting quality backlinks.

As all links are not created equally, we need to consider some points when evaluating the links that are as follows:
  • Page Rank: Make sure to consider for high PageRank websites as backlinks from those sites hold more weight for search engines.
  • Page Content: Though quality content on the site makes the biggest impact in Google ranking, it is not the only thing needed now to secure good backlinks, but the focus should also be made on getting quality links from relevant niche.
  • Anchor Text: It makes the most backlinks when targeted keywords are used in anchor-text and URLs. Anchor text in internal links is not as important as external links.
Legitimate and approved backlinks for optimization by Google that will be used to evaluate your ranking should be marked as doFollow link that includes:
  • Digg
  • Delicious
  • Foursquare
  • Reddit
  • Stumbleupon
  • Yelp
  • Tumblr
  • YouTube
  • Hubpages
As some of your backlinks go offline each year, the number of the backlinks needed for your website depends on the competition of your major keywords. The simple law that can be applied to any category, keyword or competition is: “Get more quality backlinks with proper anchor texts to your site than your competitor”!

It's important to consider that implementing all above suggestion will help building quality backlinks which leads to increase in traffic, get better results and instant improvement in your search engine rankings. Getting good quality backlinks is after all a lengthy process which can take up to several months. Alternatively, you can achieve almost immediate results using Pay-Per-Click, i.e. Google's AdWords, but those results will end as you stop paying.

5 Ways To Utilize Your PPC Budget Efficiently

Projecting costs for your next pay per click campaign can be a mysterious ride while there are multiple factors deciding your PPC budget interleaving the success level. However, among many factors, there exists a critical decision which no campaigner dares to ignore in a PPC program the “term selection”. Only bid on terms that are extremely relevant to your business. Optimism is not so good when it comes to paid search especially the one in the lines of “oh! We only provide service in Florida, but we would be providing services in Georgia someday, so why not bid on all the Georgia search terms.” You’ll collapse your marketing budget in a while.

With a combination of right tools and background research you can make your PPC campaign a success, there are many programs/tools which let you find search terms that are right for you. As, an example if you have 100 search terms, with an average search volume of 400 per day. That’ll lead you to around 12,000 potential searches per month, combine this with multiple studies and your own research and you’re good to go. Look for average click on paid ads, balance it with natural search results, look for placements of paid ads; some are on the top of a page and in the right hand column, some have sort of blue or gray background color behind them. There are many things to consider

So, setting budgets for your PPC campaigns is complicated, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. Here, I’ll walk you through some five steps to utilize every penny of your PPC budget efficiently.

1. Initial PPC Budget:

Setting an initial budget can be challenging to cake walk depending upon your level of experience. It’s though more penetrative task for a new advertisers, the key here is to use your new PPC account to test the effectiveness of PPC while collaborating with marketing channel for your business. This will give you an idea of how much to be paid for every click, driving a considerable amount of traffic to your website through paid search. Though never accurate, 100% however, an AdWords tool can estimate your chances in the terms of costs per click in different positions. Look for how does your site typically converts, calculate a ratio of unbranded/branded organic search engine traffic your site converts.

Another thing to lookout here is CPA (cost per acquisition) if it’s too high to be profitable, closely monitor it. Deciding your PPC budget can also be linked with CPA if it looks really promising, give it a longer run by allocating a larger budget.

2. Profitability :

This is actually the sole purpose of any PPC campaign and shouldn’t be forgotten in long run. Any PPC campaign should be based on profitability, making way for your business the way it actually runs. Initially emphasis on areas of your business you are most profitable and getting most attention, gradually moving to others.

3. Capping the spend

An unlimited budget is scary that’s why most advertisers cap their spending. However capping your spend can drastically effect your profitable leads and sales generation. Though capping may well suited to your total marketing budget, but limiting your leads is a greater disaster in the long run. And if traffic stops being profitable when you have to pay $3 per click, you can always take all of the profitable traffic you can get paying $2.

4. Optimize Budget for Unprofitable Campaigns

Contradictory to my last point, yes the inverse is also true: unprofitable campaign? Cutting budget isn’t the best idea. Rather, implement techniques like bidding changes, optimizations around Quality Score (better targeting and campaign structure), and so on.

Even if you limit your budget for unprofitable campaigns, you’re still losing money. Instead, fix the problems in that segment of your campaign, try to get the grip of the issue and sort it.

5. Draw a line between your PPC Budget and Paid Budget

A word of caution and my final tip: There is a world outside of PPC and to an extent Google. Search for them try a test campaign on adCenter, Facebook or LinkedIn or some 3rd tier PPC solution providers.
While the bulk of your online marketing budget will be used on AdWords. But, you shouldn’t ignore other channels you can’t leave a cost-efficient conversions by not putting your budget on these alternative networks.

Hope these 5 tips will shape your campaign in 2014.
